context
For my master’s thesis, I explored what kind of design solution could be implemented to improve farm management for small-scale farmers.
The outcome of this research is a mobile application that helps small farm owners easily manage their operations.
Research Conducted During the Thesis
As part of my thesis, I created personas for this tool. Here are the two main personas:
Jeanne Dupont, represents small farm owners and managers.
Martin Lambert, represents landowners, whether agricultural, real estate, or other. This profile was identified as a secondary target.
It is recommended to focus primarily on developing a solution for farm managers, as they are the ones with the most pressing need for digital tools.
During my thesis, I proposed an initial structure for the application.
Here are the types of data included in each section. The first version of the app was organized into the following sections: “Land”, “Members”, “News”, “Notifications”, and “Profile.”
As you’ll see later, these sections evolved in order to integrate new types of information.
Project Géion
(MOBILE APP)
I would now like to show you the screenshots of the mobile application.
Dashboard
We’ll start with the app’s dashboard.
On this screen, there is a section to initiate the PAC declaration, which we will come back to later.
There is also a section that gives access to the app’s messaging area, and another one where users can view the latest published articles.
Finally, users can access the notes they have created. These are automatically sorted from the most recent to the oldest.
Your Notes
Here is one of the main features: the “Your Notes” section. As the name suggests, it allows users to create notes. Users can add colored tags to organize their notes by topic.
They can also set a date and time range, attach documents, and link a note to a person or a location.
This section offers two display modes: list view and timeline view.
The list view allows users to quickly see text content and attached documents for each note.
The timeline view displays notes in chronological order, showing how they relate to one another over time.
Farm Management
The “Exploitation” section allows users to view all the assets they own, including land, machinery, and livestock.
This section also offers two display modes:
List view, which provides a quick preview of the data for each category.
Map view, which allows users to locate their assets geographically.
Your Land
The “Your Land” section provides a more detailed view of the fields and plots. It uses the same two display modes: list view and map view.
On the last screenshot, you can see the detailed view of a specific plot of land.
Your Animals
The “Your Animals” section, like the others, allows users to see the animals they own, where they are located, how many are in each place, and who is responsible for managing each herd (if collaborators are involved).
Your Machines
This section allows users to view detailed information about the machinery they own. It includes a photo of the machine, its name, horsepower, year of manufacture, its storage location, and the name of the collaborator who uses it.
Messages
This is a particularly important section: Messages. It plays a crucial role because we observed that many documents and pieces of information are exchanged through messages or emails, which increases the risk of data loss.
By centralizing all this information in one place, the goal is to reduce that risk. Documents are automatically stored in the conversation history with each contact.
Additionally, users can create contact groups, which is especially useful for bringing together people who are linked to the same task or area. For example, it allows you to notify all the people working on the same field at the same time.
News
The News section is designed to keep farm managers informed about new developments and updates related to their industry.
(CAP DÉCLARATION)
The CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) declaration is an administrative process that farmers in the European Union must complete each year to receive agricultural subsidies. Its purpose is to provide financial support to farmers, stabilize their income, promote sustainable farming practices, and ensure food security.
This declaration can be completed on paper or directly online via the Telepac website.
Since the Géion application stores all data related to the farm, it can automatically pre-fill the required information for the declaration. The user then simply needs to review and confirm the data to complete the process.
